Communications & Art - works to support BTU with press, design, art, social media, messaging, and content.‎

First-time volunteers might help with:

  • Designing a poster or graphic
  • Creating signs/banners at an art party
  • Capturing an event with photo or video

Other volunteer opportunities include:

  • Social Media Management
  • Writing press releases
  • Composing member email newsletters & website updates

Law, Policy & Research - researches, develops, and innovates housing policy based on the needs of our members and community.

First-time volunteers might help with:

  • Researching / learning about successful housing policy in other cities/countries
  • Participating in policy discussions

  • Working with the team to develop policy positions
  • Member surveys

Equity - leads BTU’s inclusion efforts to make sure BTU is a welcoming and accessible space, and to dismantle white supremacy, patriarchy, and other oppressive relations within BTU.

First-time volunteers might help with:

  • Planning discussion/events to improve equity within BTU
  • Participating in equity discussions at Work Group meetings

Other volunteer opportunities include:

  • Working with the team to develop trainings
  • Member surveys

Community Solidarity & Coalition Building - helps BTU connect to the broader community, build relationships with other community groups, and serve our community through service and volunteering events.

  • Helping plan a community service event
  • Attending community partner events/meetings

  • Building relationships with organizers from other organizations
  • Participating in community coalitions

Outreach & Direct Tenant Organizing - grows the union and builds long-lasting power through direct outreach to tenants, including door knocking and tabling.

First-time volunteers might help with:

  • Door-knocking / canvassing
  • Tabling at community events

Other volunteer opportunities include:

  • Working to support tenants through advocacy
  • Organizing apartment complexes/buildings

Steward & Membership - helps build community and foster relationships within the Union, plans member services such as organizing and tenant rights trainings, and supports our Union Stewards.

First-time volunteers might help with:

  • Planning a membership event with the team
  • Helping cook and/or set-up for a BTU event

Other volunteer opportunities include:

  • Learning tenant rights and educating others
  • Coordinating Steward/Member pairings
